  BEFORE  THE  FALL™

FALL Risk Assessment and PREVENTION PROGRAM...an effective first step to understanding the problem of falling, its causes and costs, how we maintain our balance, and what can be done to reduce or eliminate the risk of a falling.

Many older Americans are at risk of accidentally falling.  Identifying who is at risk and helping to reduce their risk of falling is the purpose of Before the Fall.   The effect of an accidental fall can be profound with high personal and societal costs.

Before the Fall was founded by an audiologist.  There is a relationship between balance and the ear.  The vestibular system is in the inner ear and  is one of three systems utilized to maintain balance.  More will be said about this later.

The Fall Assessment goal of BEFORE THE FALL is to identify those who

could be having a problem with their balance, assess their risk of falling, determine if there is a vestibular problem and help lessen their risk of falling.  The second  mission of BEFORE THE FALL is preventing serious falls.

Maintaining your balance is not a simple matter.

We take this ability for granted until we or someone we know has a serious fall. Maintaining our balance involves our inner ear and vestibular system, along with the use of visual reinforcement and our ability to feel the surface underneath on which we are standing (proprioception).  Read MORE

Who is at risk of Falling?

Everyone is at risk and risk for falls increases as we age. This increased risk of falling is likely the result of changes that come with aging, plus other medical conditions such as arthritis, cataracts or hip surgery.
